LAST DAY HOME

Last Day Home (HIltzik)-page-001.jpg

Last Day Home started out as a simple theme composed for my Jazz Piano Lessons. After my father passed on in 2004, I found the title poignant and decided to write two variations, one in minor and one in major.

A TOUCH OF TANGO

Touch of Tango (Hiltzik)-page-001.jpg

A Touch of Tango was composed in 2001 for a concert by the Cello Divas. I tried to honor the passionate spirit of the Argentinian tango and added some unexpected harmonies and irregular phrasing. The Divas were such divas that they couldn’t get along and ended up cancelling their concert without ever performing this piece, so I arranged it for solo piano.

SOLACE

Solace (Hiltzik)-page-001.jpg

Solace expresses a feeling of  “sadness consoled”. It’s rondo form and unexpected cadences convey how both the familiar and unforeseen each play a role in healing. This 2004 work has been arranged for and performed by string orchestras, flutists and solo pianists.

Endless River (Hiltzik)-page-001.jpg

ENDLESS RIVER

Duration: 3'15"
Total Pages: 4
(2006)

From J. R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of The Ring:

“... the beauty of the melodies ... held him in a spell, as soon as he began to attend to them. Almost it seemed that ...visions of far lands and bright things that he had never yet imagined opened out before him... like a golden mist above seas of foam that sighed upon the margins of the world. Then the enchantment became more and more dreamlike, until he felt that an endless river of swelling gold and silver was flowing over him, too multitudinous for its pattern to be comprehended; it became part of the throbbing air about him, and it drenched and drowned him. Swiftly he sank under its shining weight into a deep realm of sleep. There he wandered long in a dream of music that turned into running water…”

Endless River was composed in 2006 and dedicated to Charles Floyd, who in 2004 orchestrated and conducted five of my compositions with leading major orchestras.

Kenmore Square Dance (Hiltzik)-page-001.

KENMORE SQUARE DANCE

Duration: 2'

A humorous and lively tribute to the 2004 Red Sox World Series victory.  Many New Englanders couldn’t  have imagined the Red Sox winning the championship. The piece expresses the energy of unbridled joy. The title is tongue-in-cheek, since Boston’s Fenway Park is located in Kenmore Square.

"...your more harmonically daring compositions [are] really beautiful and seemingly more classically oriented but still with the flavor of jazz...quite remarkable work."
